Street Style Manchester: Happy Monday

Wags, formerly of the Happy Mondays and Black Grape, aged forever young, Manchester, doesnt have favourite shop but is writing a book on phobias

I have been shooting some street style around Manchester for Style.etc magazine and my freelance work and wanted to share some of the images with you in a street style series.

This is Wags, as some of you will recognise  formerly of the bands the Happy Mondays and Black Grape. Wags is a fun guy, really friendly and always up for a chat. I admire his laid back cool look, you can tell he has rock in his blood. Wags was wearing a black suit and white shirt, Clarks desert boots a favourite with Northern rock starts and two coral necklaces. The day I shot this he was helping out his friend on her jewellery stall. We chatted about the book he wants to write on unusual phobias. Wags hates clowns, there was even a song wrote about that, I confessed I find moles hands a bit freaky, they way they look like humans hands, something not right about that.

‘TRUTH’ Vivienne Westwood MAN Label Spring / Summer 14

MAN Label Spring- Summer 2014

I don’t usually like to copy full press releases, however I will make the exception for Vivienne and Andreas as I think you will like to read it in their own worlds. My notes on the Vivienne Westwood MAN collection are to keep you eye on the squiggle print brogues (in fact all the mens shoes in this collection were particularly strong, extra in fact I wish they made some of the slipper shoes in women’s sizes because I want them so much) and the Climate Revolution jumper, they will be the key pieces of the season:

I wanted a soft more feminine feel to the clothes, more ease to the fit.
Andreas and the team took their inspiration from India. And of course the first great impression is the Indian Rajas with their heavy-lidded almond eyes and their perfumed beards, their turbans and covered in a wealth of jewels- no human creatures have ever been so wealthy.

But we passed on because I donÔÇÖt have direct experience of India. I have only my romantic impressions and our inspiration comes from museums and photographs: Hindu gods and dancing and colour and flowers and spices and tigers and the jungle and the Gangees, temples and sariÔÇÖs worn by the most elegant women, beauty and grace┬¼- and the Indian children I have met in England are lively and intelligent- a huge population, the cast system. Nothing changed after the British left in 1950. The new rulers exploited the country and its people like the old colonials.

We knew we had to have colour but we began with whites, white that shines in the sun and white that looks dusty, cream and black with texture and pattern and mixed with indigo. Then checks and prints, then some colour and colour degrade. I think the overall colour effect belongs in the light of the sun.

A few motifs from Persia or Morocco crept in. There is a feeling of being in an oriental garden.

In a recent essay Noam Chomsky summed up whatÔÇÖs happening in the world: the rich are racing as fast as they can to destroy the world, the poor are fighting to stop them.
India is the most extreme example of this. The government is selling the countryÔÇÖs mineral rights to corporations and consortiums.

(these huge profits can pay for corruption)

PhotoÔÇÖs and comments come from Arundhati RoyÔÇÖs book ÔÇÿBroken RepublicÔÇÖ.

When the land is ruined the people have nowhere to go. Maoist organization fights the evictions and when people have nowhere to go they are considered Maoists, many do join the Maoists in the forests: young people, victims of atrocity, girls and boys join them. The police steal everything they can, rape, burn; they are paid to kill. The government is increasing the police force. They are purposely creating war. Why? Because they want the people off the land. Why? Because most of the minerals the government is selling are still in the ground.
ÔÇÿThe Boghghat Dam will submerge the entire area that we have been walking in for days. All that forest, that history, those stories. More than a hundred villages. Is that the plan then? To drown people like rats, so that the integrated steel plant in Lohandiguda and the bauxite mine and aluminium refinery in the Keshkal Ghats can have the river? Who will stop the Indravati (river) from being stolen? Someone must.ÔÇÖ

(Maoists in the forest)
Why is Bradley Manning featured in a collection about India? (no turbans but military berets) Well I always highjack my collections to talk politics and Bradley is there because everything is connected.
The depredation in India is caused by the global political financial war machine. Bradley stood in the path of this great juggernaut. He told the TRUTH by exposing war crimes and documents which revealed that the purpose of our wars is perpetual war for the purpose of total plunder.

Customer Testimonials

“First purchase from you and it certainly wont be my last. My daughter in law was a quality control manager at Armani in Italy. Her comments were that these trousers were excellent quality.” Alan Farr

“Brook Taverner are taking over my wardrobe because of the excellent fit and quality of all of your clothes. I have suits, jackets, trousers and a shirt!!” Robert Dellow

“What a great service! Ordered two pairs of corduroy trousers from you, both size 34″ waist. One fitted me perfectly, the other (because my waist is actually 35″) was too small. I sent the smaller one back to you asking if you could find a slightly larger cut waist. These have now been returned to me and I was delighted to find that you have either fitted or altered the waistband to 35″. In this day and age I hardly dare to expect this kind of help, particularly with ‘direct’ merchandising and I would just like to say thank you very much indeed for your efforts – I shall certainly use your services again.” Brian McEvoy

Psyche – Perfect Pitstop for Summer

PicMonkey Collage

It’s nearly summer, well alright how about I rephrase that, its time for the new season! The weather might not be reliable but that doesn’t mean we can’t invest in some cheerful and bright clothes to put a spring in our step. I do love a good shop, both online and in person depending on what mood I am in, but it can be time consuming trailing around different shops and many department stores are a mish-mash of things which aren’t any one style. This is where specialist fashion store Psyche comes in, online or in real life (should you be near Cleveland) it is a designer life style store with the scale of a department store. With 30 years in the business Psyche stands out from the crowd as it retains a boutique atmosphere of carefully selected brands and merchandise, making shopping a thing of ease. I really like the way they cater for every budget without scrimping on quality, prices range from an average of┬á ┬ú50-┬ú200. This is really clever because it appeals to the way most of us shop these days, saving up for one statement, key item and hunting out lower priced pieces to top-up our look.

1363091296Maison-Scotch-Homepage-990x470px

I thought I would pick out some pieces which I would like to be wearing this season. The first piece is this stunning jacket by Maison Scotch as ┬ú248.99 it is what I call affordably expensive – something you would save up for, an investment item. I’ve paired it here with an on trend summer look, but it would work just as well with a skirt and blouse for work or over a summer maxi-dress. Prints were all over the runways again, mix them or match them, so long as you cover yourself in them! These Paul by Paul Smith trousers and shirt are perfect for wearing together or alone. You know I am a shoe girl and I am in love with these glittery Ted Baker heels, too stunning to save just for parties, rock them with your summer dresses and even jeans. You can’t go wrong with a clutch bag, this Ted Baker in Peptobismol pink is the colour of the season, such a great pop of colour. Don’t forget your summertime chic with a pair of designer shades like these from Marc Jacobs. The easiest way to update your look is some new sparkly jewellery. I really like to layer up necklaces so these White Leaf designs are perfect for that, with their purse friendly prices you can afford to buy more than one (┬ú19.99-┬ú29.99).

PicMonkey Collagemen1

Not forgetting the guys, here are some top spring buys which will see you into summer. My statement item of choice would be this Polo by Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply shirt ┬ú118.99, the patches make the print clashing trend easy. Baseball jackets have been high on the fashion radar for a while now and show no sign of going away so this Lacoste logo bomber is going to be a key piece well into next year. The simple shape means it will work with sweats as well as a shirt and pants. A nice pair of cargo trousers like these again from Polo by Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply are nice change to denim. Keeping with the smart-casual theme these Original Penguin boots have a Herringbone inlay which hones in on the Country Heritage trend. The Aviator is by far the most versatile style of shades, these Gucci ones don’t come cheap but are a great investment as they will never go out of fashion. I think accessories are made to have some fun with, this quirky Paul Smith tablet case is really sleek, whilst the Union Jack Barbour print holdall is practical and stylish. For a colour pop this Nixon watch is a subtle way of approaching colour and at ┬ú53.99 it is a great price.

What wardrobe update do you have your eye on for then new season?

Man Wisdom: Paying the Price for Looking Good

Male grooming has been on the increase over the past few years, and shows no sign of slowing down as more men than ever are choosing to spend their cash on beauty treatments and products. Everything from specialised menÔÇÖs face wash to ÔÇÿmanscapingÔÇÖ their legs, chest and other delicate areas have resulted in a boom in the male grooming industry, and market leaders have been taking full advantage of this new phenomenon.

The most popular grooming products in 2012 were shampoo, body spray, shower gel and fragrances; though many more also use lip balm, moisturiser, hair spray and fake tan as part of a regular beauty regime.
The most popular brands used by men are not always the most recognised. While Adidas, Hugo Boss and Gillette have been found to be the most recognised brands by men, Lynx comes top with the most popular brand men use on a regular basis. Many designer brands such as D&G, Guess and Diesel are avoided by some men due to their association with femininity, and the likes of Maybelline and Max Factor, while widely recognised, would never be used due to the female audience.

DSC_7056a

It would seem that while men are happy to embrace the stereotypically feminine past time of waxing, plucking and pruning, but only if itÔÇÖs ÔÇÿjust for menÔÇÖ. Market experts have quickly realised this, hence the metallic looking bottles, ÔÇÿmorning after the night beforeÔÇÖ wording, and the presence of bootilicious women lusting after the men in ad campaigns.

ItÔÇÖs not all glamor and pampering though, as new stats from first4lawyers.com show more than 14% of men have suffered injury for their vanity. The top five treatments to have caused injury were UV tanning (20%), spray tanning (16%), hair cut or dyeing (13%), eyebrow waxing or threading (12%), and leg waxing (10%).

Perhaps the most shocking thing about these stats are the female counterparts. Men are four times more likely to sustain an injury from using a tanning bed than women, and eight times more likely to experience trouble when spray tanning.

As with all human progress, perhaps this could be due to womenÔÇÖs ÔÇÿevolutionÔÇÖ within the beauty industry, and with men still new to the process they could still have a thing or two to learn. Perhaps future generations of beauty-loving men will look upon the new comers of the 21st century and gasp in horror at the mistakes made by the first generation of salon regulars.

You will have to forgive these phone snaps but I thought they were too good not to share. We were just rolling up for an afternoon snuggled into the couches at the Richmond Tearooms, the snow was on the ground and well, sensible attire was winning over style on my account. Of course my ultra fabulous best friends turned up looking incredible and Rich wearing his ‘Vivienne’s Cape’. I was just hiding my scruffy old jumper and leggings under my huge coat, feet clad in Pirate boots, hat covering messy hair. Absolutely every stitch of everyones outfit is Vivienne Westwood, what can I say lol!

Man Wisdom: Finding the Right Jeans

  DSC_4433-1024x802

I remember when my brother first discovered what a difference wearing the correct fit jeans could make. He’s never been a fan of shopping for himself and I usually buy his clothes for him (someone marry his please). He asked me one day to pick him up a new pair of jeans to go with a smart blazer and boots outfit, I took his measurements and found a pair whilst out shopping. At first he was horrified, they weren’t the usual great big baggy, underpants exposing kind he usually wore. With a lot of protesting I forced him to try them on with the blazer and boots, it was to go to a posh meal so I said he couldn’t go with his butt hanging out. ‘Oh’, he said, ‘don’t they make my legs look longer’. I said yes that will be because you crotch and hips are in the correct place not half way down your legs! He said he had always worn his jeans baggy because if they weren’t pulled down they were too short. He had a point he’s well over 6ft.

I had to explain about the concept of jeans and other clothing for big and taller men, such as the jeans for tall men at Big Dude Clothing. Larger men stores don’t only have a range of lengths but also a range of waist sizes – no need to tuck you belly over the waist band! A recent trend I have noticed is the popularity for wearing jeans longer than you really need so they can be scrunched up at the ankle, this looks great with skinny jeans. Also having a turn up on jeans to show a flash of bright socks looks cool too. If you don’t want to go for traditional jeans then you could try a chino trouser which give the same smart-casual look. There is no real rule as to what is the correct length of jeans, it really is up to how you feel comfortable and what style you want. But don’t settle for something you don’t want because you think ‘it will do’ be sure to do your research and find out what is on offer.

Urban Commuter: Vivienne Westwood MAN SS13

Vivienne Westwood AW 13-14 a

Should almost any other designer quote ‘urban commuter’ as a reference for their latest collection, I am sure you would join me in an eye roll. I mean, could you imagine Donatella Versace or Tom Form on the tube? Of course not, however always true to her words Dame Vivienne Westwood can regularly be seen hopping on and off the tube, that’s when she isn’t riding her bicycle (usually in sky high shoes). An introduction to the collection was presented at Harrods – in the loading bay, with sculptures made from urban waste. the aim to inspire people to join her Climate Revolution.

“The revolutionary sculptures made from recycled metal and found objects that are featured within the installation were created by London born artist Joe Rush. The main structure, is entitled ÔÇÿRustang SallyÔÇÖ and was built by both Joe and artist Alex Wreckage to journey across the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA. It was created entirely from disregarded Cadillacs and re-cycled Chevrolet parts.

Both Vivienne Westwood and artist Joe Rush share a common culture and interest in defending the planet- so joined together their talent, their indignations and their combativeness in an artistic and political process.”

The clothes reflected the theme well, with a real street wear edge. Hoodies with visors, drop crotch trousers pair with high-tops, abstract leopard print knits and my personal favourite the plus-fours in coloured houndstooth. Reflective strips were use, a design quirk seen on her AW12 Gold Label suiting and presumably practical for riding your bike whilst looking stylish. For the more classic gent trademark tartan suits were present in lush plum tartan, as were soft wool tailored over coats.

The full collection will be show in Milan, 13th January.
