Outfit: Dream Dress

I’m probably a little late to the game but I’ve recently discovered designer Tara Starlet, maker of the most fabulous vintage inspired clothes – vintage inspired but not replicas so they are modern but with those gorgeous ’50s shapes such as nipped in waists and huge skirts. This is the ‘Marina’ dress and it is pretty much everything I ask for in a dress, including pockets. They had a great sale over the summer so I had a bit of a binge, other than a few vintage finds this is the first shopping purchase I’ve made in a long time so expect much more Tara Starlet on the blog soon.

Since October is my birthday month and Halloween I always enjoy it, there are flashing ghosts and pumpkins in my windows already! I’ve packed away the summer clothes and have been rediscovering warmer clothes, coats and boots. Here are a few things I’ve been wearing whilst the weather changes but I don’t think we will get to enjoy autumn for all that long, its getting colder far to fast. You might notice here that I’ve had the little tribal tattoo on my foot covered up by a larger piece – will post about that soon.

I’ve had it pointed out to me a few times recently that my style has changed recently. I think changing my hair and well pretty much my entire life style has had on impact on that. Subconsciously I have started to lean towards a 1950s style, I’ve not bought anything new just changed the way I have put together what I already have. What I do feel I am missing are some nice big jewels, fake or otherwise I do like a bit of bling. My ultimate eye-candy site is Pragnell for antique jewellery, I could spend all day looking at their jewels. In reality I am more likely to pick something cheap and cheerful from eBay but a girl can dream. I’m hunting for a statement necklace with pearls and rubies, vintage would be nice but do let me know if you spot anything. I know I’ve been most disappointing to you all lately as I’ve not bought anything, I’ve not bought one thing in the Westwood sale! There’s a few reasons for this I guess, firstly working in sustainable fashion has made me even more aware of what I have and what we are doing to the planet so that has certainly had impact. Then moving and now having my wardrobes stretched out over two house made me realise what a bloody great big hoarder I am so I’ve been rediscovering old things and having a clear out too. Now this will come as the real shocker, the last items I actually bought have been from River Island. Yep me buying High Street I know, I know. I picked up two of these Bardot tops, the black and the striped. No they aren’t very well made, especially noticeable on the striped where they haven’t even lined up the fabric, yes I would have much preferred to pay more to have something of better quality but they were exactly what I have been looking for to update my skirts and shorts. There’s a pic of the black on my Instagram (@SuperElevated) but will share on the blog soon enough. Another shocker I have for you is that my downtime uniform has ended up being denim shorts and Converse – yep I confess I really am going through some style changes.

Time for a Change!

Fancied a change so went for the chop and a colour change! Inspired by Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin and Karen Gillian. After spending my entire teens and early twenties with a rainbow variety of hair colours from bleach blond to pink I went back to my natural dark ┬áand have had it that way for the past ten years. Always a control freak and hair dresser phobe, freaking out if they chopped of more than a millimeter I have cut my own hair for the majority of that time too, only going for the odd visit when my fringe got too lop-sided from my own doings. I have been letting my fringe grown out since September but wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it until yesterday when I ┬ádecided to go for it and just let the hair dresser do what she thought was best after I waved the below pictures at her. I had it done at Hair Kandi in Sheffield, my stylist was Loren and I can’t recommend them highly enough. I chose the salon as it had paintings of pin up girls on the wall, not sure if that’s the best way to go about choosing a salon but seems to have worked for me! The colour looks different depending on the light but its lovely and shine with lots of depth. I’m really happy with it!

Wanted: One hulk to come carry a 7ft mirror home for me? Any takers??

I am getting settled into my new job and apartment however I have one major complain, total lack of full length mirrors at home and at work! I found the most amazing mirrors in TK Maxx but they don’t deliver so looks like I need to put some thought into the procurement of a mirror or work out a timer/tripod option. I haven’t quite got to the stage where I can release my crazy onto my new colleagues and get them to take outfit snaps for me. Hopefully I can get the mirror issue sorted ASAP and get back to blogging properly, until then here are some Instagrams taken at odd angles but you get the jist, right? Since the weather has been seriously dreadful there isn’t much excitement to show, heels, the wet and hills do not make a good match. There’s been tartan, tartan and more tartan. A new addition are these black velvet trousers, I got them on sale at Yoox.com and they are amazing if slightly high maintenance – no sitting cross legged as it leaves a mark, no getting even one rain drop on you as it leaves a mark… le sigh, but they look fabulous which is the main thing.

Currently gearing up for LFW which will be short and intense this season, I am just doing the weekend so packing a lot into that time, but looking forward to it as ever!

A Thought on Shoe Scuffs

1601133_703273259712729_1004412358_n

I have the tendency to have one favourite pair of shoes, I wear them and wear them until they are close to falling to pieces. Here are my most recent favourites, the red ones my last victim. Sorting out shoes for a trip to the cobblers, I started thinking about all the nicks and scuffs on my shoes. Where I might have been, what I was doing when the wounds occurred. The stories they might tell. Some I remember, others unaware. My left shoe always needs reheeling before the right, as I carry my bag on that arm and it is always over stuffed and far too heavy. I think there is something so personal about shoes, the way they mould to your feet and can alter the way you walk, act, think. To end a wistful quote from a Vogue article I recently read ‘What would life have looked like had I walked in different shoes? Would I have fallen for different men?’ Rather intriguing, don’t you think.

Halloween Outfit: The Princess & the Pea

DSC_0416

The Princess & the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess; but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted. There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be. So he came home again and was sad, for he would have liked very much to have a real princess.

One evening a terrible storm came on; there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

DSC_0488

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes; it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.

┬á┬á┬á┬á Well, we’ll soon find that out, thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom; then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

DSC_0424

┬á┬á “Oh, very badly!” said she. “I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It’s horrible!”

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

DSC_04341

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.

There, that is a true story.

Make-up: Smashbox primer; Bobbi Brown Long Wear foundation, Retouching Powder, Pink Valentine nail varnish; Illamasqua Blush Duo Katie used also on eyes; Chanel Inimitable Mascara Blue Note, Rouge Allure lipstick Kensington, Levres Scintillanties lipgloss; GO Paris glitter and stars.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Outfits: Vivienne Westwood Inspirations #4 – Conceal, Reveal

DSC_0337 (2)DSC_0339 (2)

Today I’m Wearing: Vivienne Westwood Gold Label AW10 shirt, Anglomania Kung Fu trousers, Tartan Meg Gillie Shoes from AW11, Worlds End John Bull hat, lips choker.

This looks takes the basis from the last Vivienne Westwood Inspirations post ‘Like Superman’ and tailors it right back up. In general ‘fashion rules’ the idea is to balance one oversized, baggy piece against something more fitted. A voluminous blouse with tight pencil skirt say, or a cocoon coat with sharp stilettos. Westwood however doesn’t do rules. For the SS03 collection the look was full on flounce, lots and lots of volume. Her trick to stopping the models looking overwhelmed by layers and layers of fabric was to keep the blouses off the shoulders reveling the slender decolletage and ankles.

DSC_0342 (2)

Continuing from AW11 I kept the yellow tights clashing against the tartan shoes, added the grey baggy trousers and buttoned up the shirt but kept it off the shoulders.

Outfit: Vivienne Westwood Inspirations #3 – Like Superman

DSC_0292 (2) DSC_0304 (2)a

Today I’m Wearing: Vivienne Westwood – Gold Label Prince Charming AW10 collection shirt, Yourself tshirt;Worlds End boxers, John Bull hat; Tartan shoes AW11; lips necklace.

When you’re 5.2″ posting photos of yourself next to 6ft+ glamazonian beauties isn’t generally the best idea but hey the things I do for fashion. Canary yellow tights, I’m not gonna lie, wouldn’t usually be top of my list of flattering items either. So the fact I’m doing all this wearing just a pair of boxers with tights over the top a la Superman just about put the cherry on the cake for today’s escapades. I had to do it though, out of all of Westwood styling tricks I’m going to say this is the most erm eye-catching :/

It looks undeniably amazing in the ad campaign and as it has appeared numerous times on the runway. Exposed boxers were also a big feature for SS09 where they were worn with loosely strung, crotch slit trousers. Dame Viv famously took centre stage at the Paralympics closing ceremony and later for the finale of her SS13 Red Label show, wearing the look to unveil her Climate Revolution campaign.

Dame Viv can basically wear anything she wants and make it look cool, although on a positive note she is closer to my height. Either way there was no denying this was going to be really difficult to pull off so I decided to just go for it wholeheartedly, tights, boxers, hat, crazy make up the works.

The verdict? It’s not one I will be wearing, but it is stunning for the runway and of course Dame Viv. It was really fun to try and in the next Inspirations post I will share how I made it more wearable which you might like to try yourself.
